I would like to know if we have to open some specific ports on our firewall to use skype for business on O365 ?

21 07 2018

Yes, indeed.

All clients need to be able to directly connect to Skype for Business Online on the following destination ports:

  • TCP 80, 443
  • UDP 3478, 3479, 3480, 3481
  • Optional: UDP/TCP 50,000-59,999

Skype for Business Online, the IP addresses and FQDNs can be found in the: Office 365 URLs and IP address ranges

Note: The 50,000-59,999 port range (UDP and TCP) is no longer a requirement for Skype for Business endpoints to communicate with Skype for Business Online.

Closing the 50,000-59,999 port range will force the traffic to travel via an additional hop. While logic tells us that usually we want to avoid additional hops under all circumstances, the analysis on call quality data has shown us, that this additional hop does not significantly affect call quality – since both these Relay Servers are homed on the Microsoft Network, all traffic between the Relay Servers is sent over a highly reliable pipe designed for real-time communication.

Microsoft Admits July 10 Patches Caused Skype and Exchange Server Problems

20 07 2018

Microsoft’s July 10 “update Tuesday” patches negatively affected organizations using Lync Server 2013, Skype for Business Server 2015 and Exchange Server, Microsoft admitted this week.

On the Exchange Server side, the Exchange team noted in a July 16 announcement that Exchange Server won’t function correctly as a result of “issues with the Windows operating system updates published July 10th.” The solution to the problem is to update Exchange Server using the Windows Update service or IT pros can update the catalogs used by Windows Server Update Services, a patch management system.

“Doing so will avoid any possible disruption to the MSExchangeTransport service which may have been impacted by the July 10th update,” the Exchange Team ominously added.

Microsoft’s collaborative Whiteboard App for Windows 10

Anyone can download the app and begin collaborating with other users. If you sign into the app with an Office 365 work or school account then you can also collaborate with multiple people within that organization. Whiteboard supports inking on Windows 10 so styluses like the Surface Pen can be used for collaborative inking, geometry recognition, table conversion, and automatic table shading. Whiteboard users have been using the app to write out process flows, create tables collaboratively, and brainstorm presentations.

Cool stuff.
